Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab 3 with 7-inch screen, low-end specs

Apple's releasing of iPad Mini has brought the other producers into a new competition of 7-inch tablets. Recently Samsung updated its tablet lineup with the Galaxy Tab 3, a 7-inch tablet running Android 4.1 or Jelly Bean. The device sports a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 8/16GB of internal storage memory (expandable to 64GB via memory cards), and a 3-megapixel camera on the back, coupled with a 1.3-megapixel one on the front.

If an 8-inch stylus-enabled Galaxy Note wasn't your cup of tea, perhaps this new 7-inch model will hit your screen-size sweet spot. The SoC of Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 is announced to be clocked at 1.2 GHz – possibly the 32-nm Exynos 4212 which has two ARM Cortex-A9 cores clocked between 1.2 GHz and 1.4 GHz.

The 7-inch screen has a 1024x600 pixel screen (169 PPI), which sounds awfully low by today's standards, but the device is capable of 1080p Full HD video playback. Samsung has stuffed all that into a 111.1 x 188.0 x 9.9mm package that weighs 302g if you choose the Wi-Fi version, or 306g for the 3G variant. The Wi-Fi version of the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3 will be available globally in May, and the 3G version will come in June. Exact pricing and availability will vary by market and will be rolled out "gradually," Samsung claims.

As for connectivity, the tablet will have a dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n component, meaning it will have access to both the 2.4 GHz (300 Mbps max) and 5.0 GHz network bands (450 Mbps max). The tablet will also support WiFi Channel Bonding, WiFi Direct, and include Bluetooth 3.0 and USB 2.0 connections. For the 3G model, the tablet will support HSPA+21 / 5.76 Quad 850/900/1900/2100 (3G) and EDGE/GPRS Quad 850/900/1800/1900 (2G) networks.

"With the new Galaxy' Tab 3, Samsung has evolved its range of innovative tablets, making them smaller and easier to carry, while increasing the user experience overall," the company said. "Its compact, one-hand grip form factor ensures users can hold comfortably for hours as well as store in a pocket or small bag for reading and entertainment on the go."

Samsung didn't reveal how much the Galaxy Tab 3 will retail when it begins to arrive this month, but currently the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 with 8 GB of storage and Wi-Fi only retails for $199.99 USD (Titanium Silver) and $219.99 (Garnet Red).
