Convert DRM M4P to OGG Vorbis

iTunes Store

iTunes Store is a software-based online digital media store operated by Apple Inc, iTunes has sold more than 5 billion songs to date, accounting for more than 70% of worldwide online digital music sales and making the service the largest legal music retailer. And it offers excellent integration with the world's best-selling MP3 player, the iPod. It's catalog contains more than 8 million songs as well as a variety of podcasts, TV shows, and movies. The one major bummer is that most of the tracks sold in iTunes can only be played on the iPod or iPhone and not any other MP3 player because they are protected by FairPlay which is the Apple's version of digital rights management. And these DRM protected files are basically M4P formats.

Many portable MP3 players, such as iRiver E100, iRiver Spinn, Sandisk Sansa Fuze, Cowon O2, iAudio 7 and Samsung YP-T10, support playback of OGG Vorbis. Before you convert M4P to OGG Vorbis, you may take a look at what OGG Vorbis is.

What is Ogg Vorbis?

Ogg is a free, open standard container format maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation. The Ogg format is unrestricted by software patents and is designed to provide for efficient streaming and manipulation of high quality digital multimedia. The name eOggf refers to the file format which can multiplex a number of separate independent free and open source codecs for audio, video, text (such as subtitles), and metadata. The term eOggf is commonly used to refer to audio file format Ogg Vorbis, that is, Vorbis-encoded audio in the Ogg container. Previously, the .ogg file extension was used for any content distributed within Ogg, but as of 2007, the Xiph.Org Foundation requests that .ogg be used only for Vorbis due to backward compatibility concerns. Listening tests have attempted to find the best quality lossy audio codecs at certain bitrates and the conclusion is that OGG is better than MP3 both in low and high bitrates. If your mp3 player supports playback of OGG Vorbis, it's recommended to convert M4P to OGG Vorbis instead of converting M4P to MP3.

How to Convert M4P to Ogg Vorbis

M4P files from iTunes Store are DRM protected, normal audio converters will not convert them. However, there are two ways you can use to convert M4P to Ogg Vorbis. The first one is to burn the M4P files to an audio CD in iTunes then rip the audio CD to OGG. iTunes can only rip audio CD to MP3, you may need to find another CD ripper. The second way is to record the audio streams and output the streams to Ogg format. Some programs use physical sound card while a program named Notecable uses Virtual sound card. However, these two ways are not convenient and efficient cause they cost too much time and extra work.

Noteburner introduces the third way to convert M4P to OGG. It uses a virtual CD burner simulating burning and ripping like the first way above. However, Noteburner doesn't need to insert the CD disc and Noteburner can work without a real CD burner.
