M4P and M4A File Format

M4A is the file extension for audio-only MP4 files. Files in .M4A format are actually the audio layer of (non-video) MPEG 4 movies. M4A is slated to become the new standard for audio file compression. This format is also known as Apple Lossless, Apple Lossless Encoder, or ALE. It is a new codec designed to provide lossless encoding in less storage space.

M4P is the Protected AAC File. AAC is the audio layer from the follow-on format to MP3. The .M4P extension is AAC purchased from Apple's Music Store (iTune) and is protected by a Digital Rights Management scheme. Although DRM is prevalent for Internet music, some Online music stores such as eMusic, Audio Lunchbox, Dogmazic, Amazon and Anthology recordings do not use DRM. Major labels have begun releasing more online music without DRM.
